Read pages 21-28 (Act one scene two) In what ways is Troy's brother, Gabriel, his Arch Angel Gabriel (you may want to look up this allusion to answer your question).
Troy's brother Gabriel is in many ways his Arch Angel Gabriel. In Act 1, scene 2, Gabriel says "..St. Peter would go off to sleep and tell me to wake him up when it's time to open the gates for the judgement". This quote signifies that Troy's brother Gabriel is his Acrh Angel Gabriel as mentioned in the Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible. Act 1, Scene 2 references to the Arch Angel Gabriel frequently, which allows us to believe that Troy's brother is the same character.
I agree with Anwaar, this biblical allusion was created through the conception of Troy's Brother, Gabriel, thinking he is actually the archangel Gabriel, from the bible. Within the bible, the archangel is perceived as innocent, pure and positive. And as what Anwaar stated, Troy's brother seems to have the same characteristics. (Gabriel sees positive things in life unaware of his condition) "Troy... St. Peter got your name in the book. I seen it. It say... Troy Maxson. I say... I know him! He got the same name I got. That's my brother!"
I agree with Anwaar and Sarah. In the play the allusion of Troy's brother, Gabriel, is his Arch Angel Gabriel, because in Act One, Scene Two, Gabriel says "...I done died and went to heaven. He got your name though. One morning St. Peter was looking at his book... marking it up for the judgement..." It means that Gabriel was sending a divine message to Troy that his name was on the book of Judgement.
I agree with Anwaar and Sarah because both Gabriel and the archangel Gabriel and very similar and he actually thinks he is the archangel. For instance Gabriel says "I done died and went to heaven. He got your name though." This is important because Gabriel actually thinks he's a religious figure.
I Agree with Anwaar, i think it's right that Gabe is in many ways his Anch Angel Gabriel. Because in the conversation between them.Gabe repeats that "He got your name in the book" "I ain't seen it like I seen yours" It means that he's trying to give A sign to Troy, that he really is his Arch Angel Gabriel
I agree with krisi, even tho gabriel thinks he is a archangel,he says that"He got your name in the book'. This shows that gabriel was telling Troythat his name was on the book of judgement.
I agree with Anwaar because he resembles in many ways the biblical name of Gabriel. Not only do they have the same name but there are many examples in which they are really similar. For example Gabriel mentions the book of judgments. The book of judgments is where all the names that were judged are written.
I agree with everyone. I think Troy's brother Gabriel is actually his Arch Angel Gabriel. I also think that when Gabriel says "he got your name in the book" he's actually given an advice to Troy that he is going to be judged.
Troy's brother, Gabriel, is his arch angel because he went into war and due to his injuries he receiveds money. This money that he receives is what pays for Troy's house. Without Gabriel, Troy wouldn't be able to pay for his house leaving him homeless. Even though Troy feels guilty for taking the money and using it for himself, he is grateful Gabriel provides for him.
I agree with everyone. In many ways Troy's brother, Gabriel, his arch angel Gabriel because he said "Did you know when I was in heaven ... every morning me and St. Peter would sit down by the gate and eat some big fat biscuits". In the Bible's Old Testament, Arch Angel Gabriel delivers an explanation of prophet Daniel's vision. In the play Gabriel is like trying to tell his brother something in way.
Gabriel is in a way Troy's Arch Angel Gabriel because in religion, Arch Angel Gabriel is a messenger sent from god and this is the case with Troy. Gabriel claims that he has gone to heaven and while he was there he met St. Peter. Gabriel then tells Troy that he is St. Peter's book of judgment and that he should prepare for the judgment when he comes down.
Troy's bother, Gabriel, is his Arch Angel Gabriel because Gabriel thinks he's the arch angel himself. He's thinking this because of the head injury. So Troys brother is technically his arch angel because without the money that Gabriel received, Troy wouldn't have a roof over his head. "and they give him a lousy three thousand dollars. And I had to swoop down on that." and "That's the only way I got a roof over my head.... cause of that metal plate."
Gabriel is Troys arch angle because when he got his head injury he received $3000. Troy took that money and in return took care of his brother. That money helped Troy a lot because he was able to buy a house with it. Troy wasn't able to do that himself, in the book it says " if my brother didn't have that metal plate in his head… I wouldn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. And I'm 53 years old. " his brothers injury gave him something important that he wasn't able to give himself, making him his archangel.
It is clear that Troy seems to allude that his brother is his Arch Angel Gabriel. Arch Angel Garbriel is known as a divine messenger. As hinted in the text, Garbiel mentioned several times of how Troy is in St. John's book of jugement. However the main reason why Troy thinks highgly of Gabriel is because Gabriel saved him. It is because of his injury that gave Troy a better living situation. In the beginning of act one, scene two, Troy is shown critizing people for their actions. But when Gabriel is introduced as a mentally-ill person, Troy completely support his younger brother. As stated, "I wouldn't have a pot to miss in or a window to throw it out of. And I'm fifty-three years old". This is significant because the fact that he mentioned his age reveals how he feels guilty his younger brother is supporting a lot in the family, and he will forever be indebted to him.
I agree with Quoc. It was because of Gabriel's injuries that gave Troy a better living. Troy wouldn't have had "got a roof over [his] head... [be]cause of that metal plate". I think that Troy feels guilty of being the one who used the money although it was for Gabriel's injuries. Furthermore Gabriel can be seen as Troys "Archangel Gabriel" because he does try to warn him that his time is coming soon.
I agree with everyone because he resembles in many ways the biblical name of Gabriel. I say this because he's thinking of the head injury and also the 3000 dollars he recieved. Also like without the $3000 Troy would have been no where.
I agree with everyone as well that Troy's brother Gabriel is archangel Gabriel because he does resemble the biblical name. I agree with makbule that without the head injury and $3000 Troy couldn't live the life he lives and this would be why Troy is really thankful for his brother so along with the fact that his name is in the St. Peter's book and even Gabriel think so himself, I can see why Troy comes to the conclusion that his brother is his archangel because in essence he really is

ReplyDeleteGreat inference! The theme of judgement has been in the play since the first page. This should make us ask questions?
