Read Act II scene ii pages 73-77 Rose tells Troy, "Don't push me away." How do you think Troy has been pushing people away for the entire play? How does the fence act as a symbol of this?
Troy is characterized as cold hearted and a stand offish person. Throughout the play, he isolates himself from his family because of his character. It was shown the most when Alberta died during child birth. The fence creates a symbol for this as a form of a wall between him and the people around him, even the people he loves.
Troy has been pushing people away throughout the entire play. He has pushed away Cory for wanting to do sports. Troy has pushed away his brother Gabe whenever he comes to visit and had signed for him to be locked up. Lastly, Troy has in a way pushed away Rose when he wasn't loyal to her. I agree with Sarah, the fence is a symbol of a wall between Troy and the people close to him. The fence serves as a barrier between him and his loved ones.
The fence symbolizes isolation or separation. Troy has been pushing people away through the entire play. He especially pushes himself away from him family. He doesn't spend enough time with them leading him to not have good communication with them. He is figuratively putting up a fence, meaning he is separating himself from his loved ones.
Troy has been pushing people away from him by rejecting the way that Cory wants to play football, disagreeing the way Gabe moved to Miss Pearl, and by accusing Lyons to stop at his house only to get money. Now he is pushing Rose away, because he said that he can do things by himself. Troy thinks that he is always right. Troy's attitudes are making his family members to stay away from him. Fence is a symbol, because it represents a weak relationship between Troy and his family.
I think that Troy has been pushing people away the entire play for the entire play. For example, Lyons cared for Troy and he just wanted Troy to accept him for who he is and how he lives his life. At one point in the play, Lyons asked Troy if he could go to one of his performances but he just made up an excuse to not go. Cory is another person that he tried to push away by not letting him continue his career as a football player. Even though he was into sports just like Troy, he still didn't get his approval and this caused Cory to get mad at him since he loves football. The fence acts as a symbol by keeping himself inside and other people out.
I agree with everyone. Throughout the play, Troy pushed people around him away. He ignored what Cory wants to do, which was football. He also disapprove Gabe moving to Miss Pearl's. By doing these things, he's pushing them away because he's not allowing anyone to do what they want so Cory and Gabe will probably hate Troy even though Troy is Cory's father and Gabe's brother. Also he doesn't spend much time with them. He is also pushing his wife, Rose, away. He impregnated another woman and don't go straight home after work. The fence symbolizes isolation and shows he doesn't want anything to do with anyone on the other side of that fence. The fence symbolizes the way Troy is.
Troy has been pushing people away for the entire play for instance he's been pushing Lyons away telling him to not come back to his house. He has been pushing Gabe away from him too since Rose said that Troy signed papers to go ahead and lockup Gabe. Now Troy is pushing his own wife away not coming home right after work. The fence symbolizes a barrier where the fence can keep people out or people held in for Troy and he's keeping his family members out of the fence.
I agree with Kevin and all his opinion because Troy is really doing that, he is pushing everyone away but the most hard part of the story is this one when he is pushing away his wife, he is making a lot of mistakes and if he does't stop doing this to his life he's going to be alone forever.
I agree with everyone Troy has been pushing people away from him throughout the entire novel. For example he has pushed away his son Cory for wanting to do football. Troy also pushed his brother Gabe when he comes to see him. Troy also pushed away Rose when he wasn't loyal to her and got another woman pregnant. I think the fence is a symbol of a wall or something to block people away from him.
I also agree with them, Troy was more like an anti-social character throughout the play. He didn't want anyone around him. I'm not sure if he just likes keeping things to himself or if he doesn't want people to know something about him. This is where the fence comes in being a symbol of neglect, keeping him protected from anybody.
It is interesting to say that the fence is a symbol of neglect, because Troy neglects to complete the project. Perhaps this does extend to not giving 100% to his family as well. However, it is important not to vilify Troy and to appreciate the situation he is in and the place from whence he came.
Throughout the play Troy has been building this fence. fences are meant to keep things out, to give a house it's privacy. In the play the fence symbolizes isolation, Troy is building this fence around himself. He pushes his son away by telling him that he doesn't love him he just has to care about him. He sends away his brother to a hospital after he said that he wouldn't. He also cheats on his wife unapologetically, claiming that he wanted someone to make him forget about his problems.
Troy has been pushing people away from him throughout the entire play, because of his attitude he is making people want to stay away from him. I agree with Derick, because I think that he's hiding something from his loved ones. The fence is a symbol of a wall to keep people away from him.
I agree with Edgar because he is probably hiding something and no one wants to be around him because of his attitude. He needs more family around him . The fence symbolizes a wall that Troy is using to keep away from people. What he needs to do is talk to his family about his problems. Its better to do that then push away everyone
Ever since Rose knew about the relationship between Troy and Alberta, their perspective on the fences change. For instance, Bono effectively explain her thinkning. "Some people build fences to keep people out...and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you." In other words, she wants their surrounding to come to their home. However in the end of this act, we learned how Troy's perspective differ from Rose. Troy use the fences to symbolize an isolation between just Troy and 'Death'. Their contrast in perspectives tells a lot of how Troy and Rose are distinct individuals from one another. Troy is occasionally seen pushing people away such as his son Lyone and Cory by not listening their side of the story. The fences is yet to be finished because Troy is constantly going to Alberta's place as he feels comfortable there.
I agree with everyone above. The fence basically symbolizes isolation and or in other words a lack of communication. Troy has been pushing other away throughout the entire play. Starting from stopping his son into playing sports. Which leads to Troy not caring about anyone else around him
