Read page 29-40 Act one scene three.  How do feel about Troy after you read this section of the play?

  1. I think Troy is being smart but also selfish in Act 1 scene 3 because he does not want to spend money on materialistic things. For instance Troy says, "see that roof you got over your head at night?...the next thing you know,it's gonna be leaking all over the house...i got to be thinking about the roof." in addition Troy is selfish because he says he wont sign papers for his son to go to a college football team. For instance Troy says "and aint no need for nobody coming around here to talk to me about signing nothing."

    1. Interesting observation! Perhaps it is all a matter of perspective.

  2. After reading Act 1 scene 3, my feelings about the characterization of Troy, is that he is a closed minded, unaffectionate, and a very mean person. He is blinded by the fact that he treats his loved ones and friends very poorly due to the past. To support my statement it says, (on pg. 39)" I don't want him to be like me! I want him to move as far away from my life as he can get. You the only decent thing that ever happened to me. I wish him that. But I don't wish him a thing else from my life. I decided seventeen years ago that boy wasn't getting involved in no sports. Not after what they did to me in the sports." Troy is prone to his past and its now effecting his life.

    1. After reading Act 1 Scene Three, I can characterize Troy as cold hearted, rude, and harsh. Troy is not supportive of his own sons' dream of playing football. He wants him to shift away from what he loves. Page 36 states an act of Troy's rudeness against his own son Cory,"You a bigger fool than I thought...to let someone take away your job so you can play some football." As Sarah said, Troy is affectionate to those that care about him most.

  3. After reading act 1 scene 3 I characterize Troy as mean. He doesn't support his own child's dreams. For that he is very close minded and just never nice. Troy wants what's best for his child but he is being way too mean to his kid. Troy doesn't want his child to be like him.

  4. I feel like Troy only wants the best for his son after what he has gone through with his life. Troy is also really strict with Cory because he believes that work would help better and benefit his future than sports. For instance, Troy wants him to quit football and get his job back at A&P.

  5. After reading the passage, I think that Troy is strict, and mean to Cory, because Troy thinks that Cory needs to do his chores before doing what he really wants, and he does not support Cory. Also Troy is determined, "...I'm gonna have this roof tarred." (page 33) It means that Troys wants get money to fix the roof no matter what.

  6. After reading the passage I believe Troy is misunderstood. All he wants is the best for Cory and his future. He wants Cory to do his chores before perusing his football dreams because he thinks that is what will really help him in the end. He does not support his football career at all and many people would find this to be overly strict and close minded of him but a father always wants what's best for his son and he's just trying to protect him from throwing away his life and working hard for a far fetched and non sustainable occupation.

  7. In addition to what Sarah said and the quote that she used. I characterize Troy as a strict, cold hearted person. His mindset as of now as a father is to provide food on the table for his family. However, because of his past. Supporting his son is a challenge. He believes Cory doing his chores is more important before entering the path of success into his career .

  8. I agree with everyone. After reading Act 1, Scene 3, I feel that Troy is strict, demanding because Troy expects Cory to be home and do all his chores. He would let Cory do what he wants to do, which is football. In the play someone from a college football team is coming to recruit Cory because he has good grades and plays well but Troy said he won't sign the papers because he think Cory should focus on his chores and job down at the A&P. Troy also said "Nigger, as long as you in my house, you put that sir on the end of it when you talk to me". Cory replies Yessir everytime Troy says something.

  9. I would characterize Troy after reading this section, is unaffectionate and strick. He doesn't show his son any love and wants him to do exactly what he says. He wants cory to quit football even tho it's somthing he loves. Cory feels as if his dad doesn't like him. In the passage it says "I ain't got to like you" . Troy is explaining to Cory that he takes care of him because he has too, and him doing that doesn't mean he likes him.

  10. I believe Troy is acting tough and harsh on his son almost as if he's showing tough love. He just wants what's best for his son and doesn't want him to make the same mistakes he made in his past.

    1. After reading this section of the play, it is clear that Troy is strict, but aware. We learned that Troy had a rough childhood, and believed that his past allowed him to raise a family. Cory on the other hand has been tainted with jealousy. Cory wanted his dad to buy a TV, arguing that everyone had one. Troy didn't say no, but instead compromised to pay half of the cost if he saved up enough money. This reveals that Troy does show some love to his son. He wants his son to learn how to work hard at a young age by doing chores. He doesn't want his son to play baseball because based on his prior past, playing sports profesionally was one of the worse decision he ever made. I respectively disagree with Yariza's idea of how Troy belives Cory's chores is more essential than his dream. I believe Troy gives Cory chores so that Cory can learn to be diligent at a young age, which is an essential trait to be successful. In other words, doing his chores will lead to a path of success.

    2. I feel as though Troy is a arrogant but at the same tim a loving father (although he might not show it). Troy is arrogant because he doesn't want Cory to have a football career, since he believes that he wont get anywhere in it. When he was younger he didn't have a successful career as an athlete so he believes that the same will happen to Cory. He doesn't want to admit that times have changed and that there is more diversity in sports and it's not just white males playing. By doing this Troy also shows his loving side because he doesn't want him to end up like him. He wants Cory to have a have a better job and he just wants what's best for him even if it means not allowing him to play football.

  12. I think Troy is actting selfish and a worried father, He wants the best for his son but in the same time he should think that the best for his son is not always that he think that will be the best choise , i also agree Sergio because he is arrogant when he belives that only what he think is right, He care about Cory but he also should respect what Cory want, because everyone should do something that they really love in life, Troy should also think about Cory's happines.

  13. I think Troy is a selfish man but, he is also cares for his family. Like Troy says, it is his responsibility to take care of his family. Troy does care for his family however, he always think that his thoughts and claims are always correct and everything is about him.

  14. I think Troy is a very demanding person i feel like he is that way because he want whats best for his son. And by doing his chores before what makes him happy like football is the right path for success. Troy just doesn't want Cory to make the same mistakes he did in his past.
