Journal Entry #1

Read "Setting" and "The Play" for Monday
How does the setting of the play help prepare you for the characters you are about to meet?

  1. The setting is a yard with an old fashioned house, and old fashioned furniture. I believe the characters would be simple people with simple lifestyles.

  2. The description of the setting (two-story brick house, the porch lacks congruence, a tree from which hangs a ball made of rags) shows how the characters are probably not rich.

  3. I agree with Anwaar and Sarah. The description of the setting shows that the house is simple, so the characters might be workers.

  4. The setting of the play tells us that the characters that are living in the house aren't wealthy since it is stated that the porch "lacks congruence" and that it is "badly in need of paint". Therefore I agree with Sarah in which the characters are most likely not rich.

  5. The setting of the play tells us that the Maxson Family lives in an old house. ("...an ancient two story brick house... badly in need of paint"). I agree with everyone that they're not rich. The family probably lived in that house for a long time.

  6. The setting tells us that they live in a beaten up house that they've lived in for a long time. They're furniture is pretty out dates and the condition of the porch and the yard are poor. It
seems like the family's low on money. I agree with Annie and her cited evidence indicating that they're probably not rich

  7. The setting tells us that they live in a home full of unpainted walls living under poverty . I agree with Annie with the evidence she used aswell

  9. I agree with Sarah. The last paragraph of the setting says that the yard was only partially fenced and they lived in an ancient house in a big-city neighborhood.

  10. The setting overall is saying how the house is very old and in need of repair which leads me to believe that the characters that are going to be introduced are likely poor or not as rich as others.

  11. I agree with Sergio, the characters seem to be poor because of the description of the porch, house, and yard.

  12. I agree with Sarah because the setting shows how the characters seems really poor. The reason I believe they're really poor is because outside the yard, there hangs a ball made of rags on a tree.

  13. The setting of the play help me prepare for the characters as it allows me to understand the character's position and surrounding before the actual story takes place. Witout this information, I would have not known whether or not the main character is rich, poor, or if he is from the future. However after reading the phrase, "...a wooden porch badly in need of paint," it is clear that the main character is struggling to live financially. I respectively disagree with Anwaar because I find their situation to be too severe to call it as simple.

  15. I agree with younes and Sergio because I believe the houses state does give us info on their income and that can in turn reveal info on their social status. I think the setting helps develop the characters so we know they're living in poverty and most likely are workers

  16. I agree with Sarah because basically "the setting " show the yard like a small and a dirt place, like a place that can't be the yard of a rich person so here we learn how poor are the characters

  17. I also agree with Sarah because the yard and the house give a setting of a poor and simple environment. This gives us a little look of how the characters live

  21. I strongly agree with Quoc. The setting shows helps us to understand that the characters are not wealthy and are struggling financially but are trying to make it with what they have.

  22. The setting and play show us the poor lifestyle that they live. They don't have much and use common objects to entertain themselves. Since they live in a big city with very little, I think that the characters are often grumpy because they see tons of other people who have more than them. Other characters could also be humble about the fact that they have now freedom and are living better lives than they used to. They have been mistreated compared to the Europeans who were favored over African Americans.

  23. The settings shows the economic state of the characters who we're probably going to read about in the story. It shows us that they will struggle, which will probably lead to rising tensions. The play however tells us more what life was like working and shows how life of an African American in this time period was harder than that o a European immigrant and that they were most likely offered different work which could lead to the poverty we see in the setting.
